Yeezy Air Force 1 Mash Up

After the giant hype that the Nike Air Yeezy's got at every drop it was obvious that we would see many many complilations, tributes and mash-ups involving the record-breaking shoes. Andrew Sofa, a customer and designer has created these Nike Bespoke Air Force 1 x Nike Air Yeezy sneakers and they are creating a buzz. These tribute sneakers channel the first Yeezy colorway in black and pink using a mix of suede and patent leather and clear jelly sole.

I personally don't wear Force's. They make my feet look too big, but these are kinda alright. What do you think?

Guess I Wasn't Ready

So anyone who knows me knows I'm a Trey Songz fan. I have every album. I think he makes good solid R&B and there aren't many artists out now that have cds that I can listen straight through without skipping. I had been looking forward to Trey's third album "Ready" coming out, especially after the release of his mixtape "Anticipation" that had many a boxspring squeaking track including my fave "Scratchin' Me Up" and the heartfelt "Your Side of the Bed".

So color me shocked and surprised when I finally get to listen to "Ready" and it fell flat to me. I listened and listened waiting for just one song to jump out at me and make me say "That's my Jam". I even turned up it and listened a second time. Nothing. Outside of "Neighbors Know My Name" it was just ok to me, nothing to write home about. Also, I was terribly irritated to hear "Succesful" Feat. Drake AGAIN! I expected a lot more out of Trey Songz given the vocal growth he's shown over the years. I hope his next studio release turns out better.

As a person who considers themselves a tie enthusiast I find two things very very frustrating, for my tie to be wrinkled or stained. I've draped them, hung them on hangers in garment bags and rolled them like socks. None of that leaves them with just the right crispness. Enter the tie pot. Roll your tie carefully and relax. When you're wearing a fine tie what goes better than a fine shirt? Another annoyance during a long day is a limp collar. The sequel dubbed The Blue Lobster is a follow up to very succesful Lobster Dunk from last summer. I was again blessed by the internet gods by way of my interview with Ayah. After stumbling upon her track "Might Be" on SoulBounce I had to find out about this woman. Her music has a soulful feel with that upbeat bounce that makes you want to play it in your ride, or early in the morning before work. The self-taught singer/song-writer/composer is both a consumate professional and down-to-earth girl next door that you can catch working her way into the big leagues via MTV's Freshman videos or tweeting every happenings like the rest of us on Twitter @ayahmusic I was lucky enough to get an interview with her, and even though she doesn't eat grits I still dig her. Speak English!: So tell me this first, when did you fall in love with music?
Ayah: I'm not sure. I think it was a gradual, natural process. It had me at hello and grew from there!

SE: Well put. I read that you are self-taught singer/songwriter/composer. Did you ever think about taking voice lessons or musical theory classes?
Ayah: Well, I took piano lessons for a long time. I took a couple weeks worth of vocal lessons. I feel like I work hard to hone my craft by ear, but it would be nice to take more classes in the future. Always strive to be the best I can.

SE: I know you compose your own music, is that you playing in your songs?
Ayah: I write everything and co produce most of my songs. It's not me playing. I'm not sure why I haven't actually played my stuff. If I write my stuff to piano and now to guitar, I usually just play it for the producer and then co create with them. I will definitely start playing more soon!

SE: Why did you start making music?
Ayah: I make music because I can't not. It makes me happy. It makes me smile. It's my religion. Plus it's fun!

SE: What artists influence you?
Ayah: Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Andre 3000, Erykah Badu, Dj Jazzy Jeff, Mary J Blige, Tona, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Common, Kanye, Whitney, I can go on, but I'm sure you feel me.

SE: How would you describe your sound to people who have never heard your songs before?
Ayah:Hmmm, I would say...I make music you can feel! The genre is the feeling genre!

SE: How do you choose your subject matter? Do your songs reflect your own personal experiences?
Ayah: My subject matter is always built around what ever it is I'm going through at the time or what my friends are going through at the time....they come from conversations, feelings, observations, conflicts, resolutions, dreams..

SE: Is the music business everything you thought it would be?
Ayah: Haha, It's everything i thought it wouldn't be. Naw, really...I didn't know what to expect. I knew it would be hard work, and it's proven harder than I thought. Also, the industry has changed alot and so we've all got to figure out new, creative ways to make it happen!

SE: Have you ever felt pressured to look or dress a certain way, or sing about a certain topic to sell?
Ayah: Yes. I'd lie if I said no. But, you get over that. You learn yourself over time and you evolve in to your own person. I think I'm evolving (smiles). I hope I'm always evolving!

SE: If you could collaborate with any artist in the business right now, who would it be?
Ayah: Well, I am collaborating with Dj Jazzy Jeff, the Magnificient, which in it's self is one of the biggest honors. Other than that, right off the top, I'll say, Andre 3000. (There's many however)

SE: What are you working on right now?
Ayah: Right now, I'm releasing 4:15, my debut album, April 15th through Ayahmusic.com!! (Digital release June 2nd, 2009!). Definitely excited about that. I'm also in the studio working with Dj Jazzy Jeff on the next project!

SE: Why'd you title your album 4:15?
Ayah: 4:15 am is when I am the realest me. I'm at home working on music or asleep dreaming about it! I'm wearing glasses, I'm in sweats, my makeup is off, and I'm just me!

SE: What are you trying to say to people with your music?
Ayah: I'm trying to say we're all the same. We all have weaknesses and strengths. We have to take a stand when neccessary. We must make good music. We must strive to always be better.

SE: What do you put on your grits?
Ayah: Truthfully, I've never eaten grits, believe it or not! Haha...When I try them however, I'll let you know!

Forever In A Day

I've liked Day26 for awhile now. I was looking on as all five men eagerly awaited making the band. I suppored them because I love male R&B groups and they actually have pretty nice voices. Their sophomore effort entitled "Forever In A Day" boasts such titles as "Bipolar", "Truth is a Lie" and "Babymaker" as well as the already released single "Ima Put it On Her" featuring Yung Joc and Diddy A.K.A. ciroc Obama. With it being Easter there were a few family things in the mix, not for that holiday itself, but for the time of reflection taking by Muslims to honor it's foundations and how they are portrayed in the Qu'ran. The columbian born illustrator and textiles expert puts extrordinary art in unconventional places. If you take the time to look past the awe you will see that there is a reason and a message that Ximena is trying to convey.

Eating in our culture has become feeding, as we are no longer fully aware of, and have any real say in, what we actually eat. Interview with Solemates. . . Chicago

This week I took another trip to the boutique Solemates. . . Chicago. I love this store. If you find yourself in Chicago or if you live here you really need to make your way down there. It's not like going to the mall. It's a lifestyle experience. They have the friendliest staff and there knowledge on the industry is exceptional. I had the great fortune of catching up to Autumn, one-half of the dynamic duo that built Solemates and she answered a few questions for me. . .

Speak English!: When and how did solemates get it's start?
Autumn of Solemates...Chicago: Opportunity presented it self with Brian and I both leaving our jobs and we were fortunate enough to have funding at the time. We created a business plan, shoppe it around and started going from there.

SE: So was running a boutique always your dream?
AofSMC: Nope. I like doing things u like. I've always been in retail, sealing with people, having a knack for fashion it was what we were meant to do

SE: So I know that a portion of the store is dedicated to consignment. What does being a consignment store entail exactly?
AofSMC: Consignment is the resale of goods. Sneaker collectors use us to sell shoes for them.When they are sold they we send the owners a check for eighty-five percent of the sale.

SE: How do customers benefit from going to a consignment store as opposed to a major shoe retailer like Foot Action or Champs?
AofSMC: They get to find something old school they won't find in stores, search through nostalgia dead stock and hey it might even be in your size.

SE: You carry a lot of stuff here that I don't see in other stores around the city or hadn't even heard of before I walked through the door. How do you choose what brands you carry in the store?
AofSMC: We like clothing that isn't already well represented in Chicago, or even the states. We only bring in brands we can vouch for, that we believe in what they're doing and what they are bringing to the table.

SE:There are a lot of street wear/urban wear boutiques in Chicago right now. What does Solemates...Chicago bring to the table that these other stores don't?
AofSMC: We are very customer oriented. We like to get to know the people who come in by name. We like looking at it as a genuine approach to sales. We wont push anything on you that doesn't look good or fit your personal style. We also offer a men's and women's perspective on fashion.

SE: Do you think the world of fashion point of view is recycling the same-old styles or evolving with time?
AofSMC: It's all a cycle. There is really nothing new under the sun. As far as Chicago goes, we are getting out of the box now and exploring individual style

SE: How did Solemates get linked up with The Brooklyn Circus?
AofSMC: I met Ouigi in June 2006 while I was working at another boutique in the city before we started solemates and spent time with him, helping him get a feel for the area and the market. He ultimately decided not to open a store here, but when we got Solemates open we thought it was only right bring then in and be a concept shop for them.

SE: Are there any other collaborations that you would like to see happen?
AofSMC: Nah, not that I can think of right now.

SE:What do you want Solemates represent as a brand?
AofSMC: [It's] classic, mature, but comfortable.

SE: What's the next step for Solemates...Chicago?
AofSMC: We're working on developing a private label right now.

SE: What's your favorite Chicago spot?
AofSMC: I really like to try new restaurants, none in particular, just something new.

SE: What do you put on your grits?
AofSMC: Eggs and cheese. I'm really feeling shrimp and grits right now too.

It is always a great experience when you get to sit and discuss the state of the world and the state of fashion with someone who is intelligent with well developed opinions. I got to do that in the best way when I sat down to talk to Dana Scruggs the owner of the online boutique SCRUGGS. In a world of carbon-copy sameness both in-store and online it's refreshing to find something different and that is what you get when you visit SCRUGGS. Check out the interview below!

SPEAK ENGLISH!: What gave you the idea to start http://scruggsshop.com?
Dana Scruggs: Well, I always wanted to own my own business. I wanted to have a place that I would want to shop that is affordable. There isn't a lot of affordable shopping [out there].

SE: Do you feel that SCRUGGS follows trends, sets trends or ignores trendiness all together?
DS: I'm really into fashon forecasting so, I dont think I follow current trends. I think I'm more in touch with future trends. I check out various European magazines and fashion forecasting books to see what's going to be prevalent 2-3 years from now.

SE: What are your feelings on the state of fashion right now?
DS: In terms of urban fashion, I feel it's a bit stagnant. A lot of people are copy cats. They dont really [seem] comfortable in the look they are wearing. I feel some people spend a lot of money to look like other people. Even in the light of the recession, you can look original. You dont have to spend a lot of money to look unique and stylish.

SE: How do you choose the merchandise on the site?
DS: I choose what I think is fashionable, edgy and different. I do try to check out trends, but not necessarily current ones. I read a lot of magazines like Vogue Italia and Elle UK. They're on top of what people will be wearing 1-2 years from now. I also pay attention to what kids are wearing on the street. Basically, I choose what I like. I try not to be trendy because my customer doesn't want to look like everyone else.

SE: What is the process if a designer wanted to sell their clothing or accessories on SCRUGGS?
DS: Currently I'm only carrying vintage, but maybe if you're carrying an accessories line get in touch with me. I'm just trying to keep it more streamlined right now. I want a clear brand image for my customers who enjoy purchasing vintage and one of a kind items, well as being eco-friendly.

SE: When did you start moving towards being eco-friendly in your business?
DS: I started out eco-friendly by carrying tees made with water based ink and that were hand cut. So from the [beginning] I've been going in that direction and now I'm taking it to the next level.

SE: I know you said you are only carrying vintage items now. Are your customers still going to be able to buy the old style of merchandise?
DS: All of that is currently on sale. It's a good chance to buy something that was expensive at up to %50 off.

SE: Spring is right around the corner. What is the must have accessory for the season?
DS: My green two piece "Caprica" suit on SCRUGGS right now. It's lightweight, with high-waisted shorts and a jacket. I think its fresh. Most people aren't doing suits with shorts. You can dress it up or down, sneakers or heels. I think it's pretty versatile. It works well in a lot of different ways.

SE: Why should people shop SCRUGGS?
DS: I feel like I made an effort for everything on the site to look really tailored and high quality as opposed to most online vintage stores. They're look tends to be loose and bohemian. I prefer strong/clean lines that you can feel sexy in.

SE: What's the difference between SCRUGGS and other online vintage retailers?
DS: It's easy. My main goal was for it to be a lot less frustrating then dealing with Ebay. A lot of online vintage stores are [run] through Ebay. It sucks if you put all that time and effort into [bidding for] something only to lose it at the last minute.

SE: Is there a SCRUGGS line coming any time in the future?
DS: Hopefully. A private label is definitely a goal of mine. Unfortunately, with the economy, it wont be as soon as I hoped. Hopefully the coming years will see the start of a line.

SE: You're a Chicagoan, what's your favorite daytime spot?
DS: Honestly my bed. I work at home I do everything from bed.

SE: Night time spot?
DS: Salud on Milwaukee and Honore. Great ambience, the food is great, and the mango mojitos are addictive.

SE: What do you put on your grits?
DS: I haven't had them in a while but when I did I put a lot of butter on them.

While it is sometimes underrated, and mostly used for hook-ups round the world Myspace has some gems if you're willing to look for them. I randomly landed on the profile of Natasha Puckett a.k.a. the Lover of the Keys. It's one of the best discoveries in a long time. The young singer/songwritter/composer out of Chicago is a self-taught musician who has been making her own music since the age of 8. Read the interview and check out her candid, tongue-in-cheek take on music and the music business today. Pause the music to the left and enjoy this Lover of the Keys track while you read along.

JUST MY TYPE - LOVER OF THE KEYS

SPEAK ENGLISH!:What was it that orignally attracted you to music?
LOVER OF THE KEYS: I've always been into music. It started when I was young living in my grandparents' house and all you heard was old school music. Luther, Natalie Cole, Nat King Cole and Anita Baker. I grew up having a great appreciate for good music.

SE:Why did you decide against being classically trained? Do you ever plan on taking any lessons?
LOTK: I never decided against it. [I just] really couldn't afford it. As I got older I started picking up books or video trying to learn a few things on my own, but I grew frustrated with that and bored. I plan on trying to learn some theory cause its always helpful to know it.

SE: Do you feel that traditional lessons are crucial to success in the music industry?
LOTK: Not really. If you put out good quality and work someone will you pick up. You just [have to] be patient.

SE: Alright, I feel you on that one. How would you describe your sound to people who've never heard your music before?
LOTK: I hate to be confined because I like all forms of music, and being a musician I've played all genres of music, so its a taste bit of everything. Neo soul, R&b, jazz, funk, pop. I might make a hip hop track and sing over it. I like it all.

SE: Let me just say that I LOVE your music. I listen to it often. You compose and arrange your own music right?
LOTK: Yes indeed. I compose and arrange it all

SE: Do you play all the instruments as well?
LOTK: When I compose I do my work from my Yamaha motif 7 a.k. a "my baby", and I track out everything manually so every instrumental sound you hear including drums I am playing.

SE: That is impressive! I know you can't have one without the other, but which one do you prefer, singing over the music or making it?
LOTK: I am a musician first before anything. I love to sing, but its something about playing those keys and making music that just the greatest feeling ever. Its better than sex. (Laughs openly)

SE: What artists have influenced you the most?
LOTK: OK dont laugh. I freakin' love Diana Ross. Really I do. After that I would say Janet Jackson, Jill Scott and Brandy.

SE: I have to laugh at that! Okay, let's talk politics. Do you think being an openly lesbian artist will pigeon-hole you into a niche market and prevent you from getting more exposure?
LOTK: I surely do, and that sucks but I cant hide who I am and I wont hide who I am. If people dont like then they just dont like it. I have a tough enough skin and I'm ready to accept it all, the good and the bad.

SE: Have you faced any professional discrimination because of your sexuality?
LOTK: I've had some "Big People" say they really like my music and my tone and everything, but then turn around and say in order to proceed we have to change who your singing about and how you dress. Which [I feel] takes away who I am.

SE: It's disheartening to hear that. Would you change your personal look/style or downplay your sexuality in order to propel your career? LOTK: LOTK: Hell to the naw! (laughing) I would not make myself uncomfortable to make others comfortable. I have to live in my skin, and I like to keep it real. I'm sure if I were to do that the money would be great, but I wouldn't be honest with my fans or myself. I am a true artist.

SE: I respect that. Not enough people respect who they are enough to not let it be changed by what they do. How much, if any, has Myspace helped your career? LOTK: It helps in getting my gigs, and interviews(smiles) and gives the lesbian community something to smile about. I'm not another butch that's rapping. Nothing against rappers. I'm just saying, we know its a lot of butch rappers out there!

SE: [LAUGHS]True. Do you have any new projects in the works?
LOTK: Working on a music video which will extremely hot and I'm working on a CD release party

SE: You're a Chicagoan. What's your favorite day time spot?
LOTK: When its warm I like to just hang around down town or at the lake.

SE: Night time spot?
LOTK: Whatever club that's poppin.

SE: What do you put on your grits?
LOTK: Not sugar!!!!!!! Only butter and salt and pepper.

No It's Not Sushi

The title refers to the brand Ksubi which to some sounds like a type of sushi or a Japanese restaurant, but is actually an Australian brand that specializes in edgy denim and deconstructed looks. Their looks are interesting to me because they highlight playing with proportion and using pops of color to accent and play up the intricate details. You know that quality construction is one the key points of a line, and Ksubi has it. It may seem easy, but a lot of work goes into creating "destroyed" denim and making it wearable for long periods of time.

Sea and Sky Clothing

I was once again a lucky kid in the candy store doing an interview with Sea and Sky Clothing. Run by twenty-something guys out of Houston, Sea and Sky brings clean and inspired designs with a hand-crafted feel to comfortable casual wear. Read the interview and see how we scratched surfaces about their origin, the design process and their sponsorship of the Xtreme sports. Even though the man doesn't eat grits I still have love for him.

Speak English!: So tell me, how did Sea and Sky Clothing get it's start?
Sea and Sky Clothing: I've always really been into art and design, and the idea of starting my own clothing company was in the back of my mind. We started this company in March of 2008 and eventually after we decided on a name, it became the driving point of inspiration for what we wanted to build the company around.

SE: Why did you decide to do a line of slim-fit clothing?SaSC: SaSC:Well, not all of our clothing is slim-fit. We've used American Apparel [to print our designs on] for its quality and shape but we mainly just want to focus on making clothing with designs that people can get into.

SE: Alright. I feel you. You have to go for quality. Speaking of quality, let's talk design aesthetics. There is a lot of text-based design in your t-shirts. What made you go that route?
SaSC: The majority of the text that is included in our designs includes our name. I think it just really ties into the fact that what we enjoy and can be proud of the name, so we definitely want to make it an important element in our designs.

SE: Do current trends influence you in design?
SaSC:Trends really don't have that much of an impact on the designs that we create because we ideally want to run a clothing company that stays true to itself and can ultimately survive the many trends that come and go in fashion on a regular basis. Fads come and go so if we can continue to grow making clothing that we can be proud of and sticks around, I can say that would be the best kind of success.

SE:Where do you draw your inspiration from?
SaSC: I have always been drawn to nature related designs, so obviously our choice of name has opened up the landscape of possibilities even more for me. When we originally started out, I hand drew the "Ocean Tee" and the "Leaf Tee" but the process is so timely and tedious that I can't find time to do it anymore. We have other people submitting really cool stuff recently that we have been working with. It's just really exciting to see the different inspiration that has driven these artists to make original pieces.

SE: Explain to me the hand-crafted tee making process and why you went that route?
SaSC: When we originally started, I hand drew the first two designs with font and all. I would then scan them and edit/color them in Photoshop. It's actually a really tedious process and I just can't find the time for it anymore.

SE: That's a shame. I think your hand drawn work is dope. Do you know how to make patterns? tailor?
SaSC: No. I went to high school as an art design major but we currently don't make any of our fabric.

SE:How important do you think traditional garment making skills are to a budding designer?
SaSC: I think it really just depends on what kind of goals and clothing that you want to have. If your ultimate goal is to be a designer that presents their work in Fashion Week for that kind of market, then traditional garment making skills would pretty much be mandatory for creative purposes.

SE: So riddle me this: How did you get linked up with Joe Nelson and why have a team rider?
SaSC: Helping out the BMX scene is one of the biggest reasons that I started this company, so the opportunity to support solid riders is important to us. Our team currently consists of Joe Nelson, DeMarcus Paul, Trent McDaniel, and Hunter Wright. Each one of these guys is great and represent us very well.

SE: Where do you see Sea and Sky Clothing in 5 years?
SaSC: I think we will definitely branch out more and grow our team. We have all these ideas for getting into jeans, which I'm really excited about, so hopefully that will launch eventually in the future. The market for girl clothing is also something I could see us tapping into, so that's also a possibility. We'll just see what happens.

SE: Ok, off topic, if you could live in any other country which would it be and why?
SaSC: Australia would be an amazing country to live in because besides the fact that I wouldn't have to learn another language, they have incredible beaches.

SE: What do you put on your grits?
SaSC: I don't eat grits, actually!

Man. Let me take a deep breath before I spill my thoughts. . .

Alright, I just want to start by saying thank you. Big giant thank you to everyone who takes the time out there day to read what I have to say. Thank you for following me on twitter, adding me to your BlogLovin' pages, adding me on myspace, bookmarking me whatever you do. Thank you for that. Another big thanks to those who take the time out of their hectic schedules to sit down and do interviews with me. Big ups to Omen for that interview and sending some of your fans my way! Another big thank you to my mom and dad. This isn't even your bag yet I still feel your love and support for what I'm trying to do. I love all y'all, with the exception of Amber Rose. Nah, I kid.

I digressed though. I want everyone who reads to keep reading. It's just getting bigger and better from here on out. Stay on the look out for more of the best in fashion and art. Look out for much more music. (Thanks Teddy) Definitely keep watch for many more interviews. They are coming.
